The Western World (EN 267) This course surveys the many issues suggested by death as a topic of writing. Students explore the literary treatment of death including suicide, the attitudes of societies toward the dying and the dead, and the answers provided by religions and philosophies. Through study of literary sources from ancient Greece to modern America, students define life and death in order to understand significant attitudes and trends toward death in Western society.
